No JDK6 with OS X 10.5 Leopard

So what’s up with Java on the Mac? After the initial chock of Apple not mentioning anything about Java 6 support in Leopard, as well as pulling the alpha/beta release from ADC a while ago the future of Java as a first-class citizen on the Mac has been questioned around the blogosphere..

Well having just installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro (The upgrade was painless, 30min) I can say that JDK 6 is not included in Leopard, those of you might remember that JDK 1.5 shipped exclusivly with the Tiger release, and I was really expecting the same this time.

Hopefully (and most probably) Apple will release a JDK 6 sometime, but the real question here is “sometime”, how long can you afford to wait? (For the record Sun released JDK6 almost a year ago at December 11 2006)

So how does this effect you? Personally I am not that effected since I mostly do Enterprise development, but I could use the speedup in JDK6 for running IDE’s and other tools.

Indeed, if I remember well, Java 5 was _not_ shipped together with Mac OS X 10.4, instead it was available as a separate download. So we have maybe a little hope – before start complaining I’ll wait until the beginning of the next week to see if Java 6 appears in the download area.

But I’m pessimistic. If things goes bad, and also considering that I can’t tolerate any longer the “no roadmap” policy of Apple, I’ll start moving to Linux as my primary development platform. I’m doing a lot of desktop programming and I need Java 6.

If I remember correctly 1.5 was shipped with tiger, but not the default (see my post http://blog.refactor.se/2005/09/29/tiger-on-tiger-jdk-5-on-os-x-104x/) , but it’s really not the point. I’m also concerned about the absence of road map for Java on OS X.

This is the final straw for me. I can forgive Apple being late with Java releases. However, I can’t forgive Apple’s hush-hush attitude. It’s ridiculous and it’s why businesses are hesitant to go Apple – Apple’s PR games are more important than its customers. I’m going Ubuntu as soon as it has good EFI support…

It’s the hush-hush attitude that has me upset too, jar head. I posted several messages on Apple’s Leopard discussion forum. My post was met with flames from the mindless drones that think Apple can do no wrong, and to make things worse, my posts were deleted from the forum by the moderators!

Got my new MacBook Pro months ago and really enjoy it. But now that java 6 is not available anywhere (not even in beta) I’m already switching to Ubuntu.
Apple completely disappointed my and Java community !

I completely agree. I will send Leopard back to Amazon and switch to Ubuntu.

I completely agree with you. Another big point of fustration is that Apple REMOVED the Java SE 6 preview from the ADC. So if you didn’t have it a month ago, you can’t get it at all. Come on Apple! Get with the times.

    Guys,

While I was pretty steamed up about this at first too (and there still is no excuse for the delay both in deliverable and a tangible roadmap) it’s a bit early to ditch our Macs over it.
What do have to do is send a clear message to Apple to not forget the mindshare they have built up in the Java community and that they need to deliver on their promise of making Java a first class citizen.

I’ll start to get worried (and migrating to Ubuntu) if there is still nothing tangible for another month or so

it’s a little annoying that Apple has no replies for the users request to get java6 released.

How long do we have to wait for java6 released
