JBoss training next week
Next week I will be attending a training session on Jboss in Stockholm (JBoss for Advanced J2EE Developers), the course details looks promising and hopefully it will dwelve into some gory details.
CI server comparison
Found out that IBM developerworks has posted an article comparing CI (Continuous Integration) servers. The products tested are CruiseControl, Luntbuild, and Continuum. Sadly I miss a feature-by-feature comparison of the product. I have used CruiseControl and Luntbuild in the past (the later just very briefly). I’ve been hoping to take Continuum for a spin, and perhaps it’s about time.
Sun on the Open source plans
According to different sources (blogs and news.com) something similar to a release plan in forming.
According to this javac and hotspot will be open sourced at the end of this year. They also say they will open source the complete Java ME stack (this was the real surprise for me).
The complete stack of Java SE will be available at beginning of 2007, and as suspected some part will remain closed source due to licensing.
The actual license is unclear at this point, but seeing that Glassfish CDDL (Community Development and Distribution License) it would be a logical step.

RedHat aquires JBoss
The time of doubts are over, there has been some speculations about presumable buyers. But today the Redhat entered into a definitive agreement to acquire JBoss. I guess time will tell if this is a good move or not.
More information & Q&A available here
Java EE 5 preview and NetBeans pack.
Sun has released a preview version of the Java EE 5 SDK, and on the same time an Enterprise Pack for NetBeans.
From what I can tell the Java EE 5 SDK is just a frozen version of the open source Glassfish appserver rebranded to “Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9″ which includes features such as EJB3, JSF 1.2, JAXB 2.0, Java Persistance, JSTL 1.2, Streaming API (StAX), Webservice Metadata.
The SDK is still branded beta, since the spec hasn’t reached final yet.
At the same time Enterprise Pack for NetBeans has been released, and includes some new features such as support for the above SDK, UML and Visual Design Tools for SOA Architects (whatever that is) and the appserver bundled.
Kodo going Open Source??
In a interview over at BEA Dev2Dev, BEA Senior Directory Neelan Choksi effectively breaks the news that BEA will open-source its KODO EJB persistence product as “Open JPA”.
Firefox 1.5
After a series of betas & RC’s the browser of my choice Firefox released 1.5 today.
Among the news is automatic updates, faster browsing (whatever that means), better tab handling (finally the possibility to move tabs around!), better OSX support.
First impressions are good, still some minor issues though, it mostly seems related to my folderorg script when downloading files.
IBM releases WebSphere Application Server Community Edition
IBM today released a product called WebSphere Application Server Community Edition (or WAS CE for short)
The product is based on GlueCode (which where acquired by IBM this summer), and technically it’s based on Apacher Geronimo
According to the IBM marketing fuzz
“WAS CE features a small footprint, making it easier to download and manage. Based on core open source technology from the J2EE-certified Apache Geronimo application server, WAS CE and related subscription support provide a flexible and affordable alternative to traditional commercial software offerings and can help customers begin to deploy a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).”
The initiative seems nice, but not a really surprising move considering IBM’s flirting with the Open Source Movement lately.
I guess i have to put it on my “to test”-list. Hopefully the quite good admin console from WAS has made it over.
MySQL 5.0
MySQL has release version 5.0 of their RDB today, and I must say finding what’s new wasn’t the easiest task around. The whitepaper kicks you straight to a registration page…
Has MySQL forgotten their roots?
I wonder how long it will be until the Hibernate-project has implemented support for 5.0, I am guessing just a couple of days.
Jboss + Microsoft
Marc Fleury blogged about some groundbreaking news to be revealed, the pressrelease surfaced today.
Pardon me, but I am not that impressed. Integration with windows? Sure it’s a nice feature, but does JBoss on Windows really have a significant install base? And do you really want to tie you applications to yet another Proprietary system like Active Directory? Oh well I guess it doesn’t hurt, but I am not impressed…
